An island cooking surface has two ventilation options and neither is simple. An island hood needs a long vertical run and a clean path through the roof, and every elbow and every foot of that run costs airflow the label never mentions. A downdraft avoids the ceiling entirely but brings its own mechanism, and that mechanism lives in the cabinet below the cooktop where households store things.

A downdraft that rises part way and stops is most often the drive belt or the lift motor, occasionally something wedged in the track, and rarely the control. Before we quote a motor we clear the cabinet and work the track by hand, since that is the cheapest thing to correct and the easiest thing to miss.

Where the complaint is that the hood or downdraft simply does not pull, the distinguishing question is whether it got worse or was always disappointing. Something that has faded points at the blower wheel, the motor or a loaded filter. Something that never performed points at the duct, and no blower we can sell you will fix a duct.

Induction that cuts out under load

Induction cooktops in these kitchens are usually set over base cabinets with drawers, and the electronics under the glass are cooled by a fan that needs a clear path. A drawer box packed to the underside of the cooktop blocks it. The result is a zone that works perfectly for a quick boil and shuts down twenty minutes into anything sustained, which is the single most common induction complaint we take here.

The pattern is diagnostic on its own. A genuine power stage failure does not wait for the appliance to warm up, and it does not recover after ten minutes with the cabinet open. So we ask what was being cooked and for how long, then check the clearance and the airflow path before anyone prices a generator board. A new board in the same cabinet fails in the same way, on the same schedule, and the second visit is a much harder conversation than the first.

Pan detection is worth ruling out at the same time. Warped bases and thin multi-ply pans lose contact with the glass as they heat, and a zone that drops out with one pan and holds with another is telling you about the cookware.

Access on an island installation

Island work is physically different from work against a wall. A cooktop is lifted from above and is often sealed to the countertop, so the bead has to be cut cleanly and remade afterwards. A downdraft mechanism comes out from below, through a cabinet opening that was sized for the appliance and not for hands around it. Neither is difficult, but both take longer than the same repair on a perimeter run, and both are far easier if the cabinet is emptied before we arrive.

If the island has a stone top with a tight cutout, say so when you book. It changes what we bring and it occasionally changes the order of the work.
